Join us on Tuesday, May 20th at 7pm in the Colleges Nine and Ten Multipurpose room for the 11th Annual César Chávez Convocation with keynote speaker, Cesar Cruz.

The César Chávez Convocation is an annual event held in honor of the memory of César Chávez and his commitments to social justice and civil rights. The convocation provides a platform for the UC Santa Cruz campus and Santa Cruz community to engage in a dialogue on Latino leadership and social justice.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Cesar Cruz, of the Homies Empowerment Program. Cesar Cruz is an author, organizer, activist, and educator, who has dedicated his life to fighting for justice. He was born in Juchitlan, Jalisco, Mexico and migrated to the U.S. at a young age. For the past twenty years, Cruz has been an educator and community organizer. He co-founded the independent school, “Making Changes”, out of his own home and has sought to create autonomous education spaces. For the last five years, he has overseen the Homies Empowerment Program, serving gang impacted youth in Oakland, CA. Cruz, a UC Berkeley Alum and doctoral candidate in Education Leadership at Harvard University, is also the author of two books, “Revenge of the Illegal Alien” and “Bang for Freedom”.

This convocation is held in collaboration with Colleges Nine & Ten CoCurricular Programs, El Centro: The Chicano Latino Resource Center and student volunteers as part of the César Chávez Convocation Planning Committee.
