The students of the CLTE 85 Social Justice Issues Workshop have been fundraising for the last 9 weeks with the mission to educate other UCSC students about women experiencing adversity and precariousness. The students felt passionate about this topic and have successfully raised over $1,100 for two local Santa Cruz organizations: the Homeless Services Center and the Walnut Avenue Family and Women’s Center.

Our final project, the “WOAH” (Women Overcoming Adversity and Homelessness) Carnival featured games that had an educational twist about women experiencing poverty at each game booth.

The Carnival also collaborated with many other UCSC organizations, such as, Los Mejicas, Taza Tal A’capella, Sigma Lambda Beta, and many others to provide the community with great performances all in support of the cause. The combination of educational carnival games, carnival styled food by donation, a variety of live performances, and raffle baskets allowed for College Ten and the UCSC community to come together and celebrate the importance of bringing attention to the issue of women experiencing precariousness.  Student planners were proud that their hard work paid off – both in terms of providing an engaging, informative and fun event, and in making a significant contribution to the community partners to support the valuable work they do.
