Multicultural Community Weekend [MCW] is a two-day retreat for students who want to gain leadership skills and deepen their awareness of College Ten's theme of Social Justice and Community through interactive exercises and small group discussions.  These exercises and discussions are facilitated by College Ten staff and student leaders.  Offered annually, this program is a cherished cornerstone of the College Ten experience.  As one College Ten and MCW alum reflects, “The MCW experience is life-changing!  This truly was the most formative experience of my undergraduate years.”

This year, on January 26-27, a group of 23 student participants and 7 student co-facilitators went with two College Ten staff members to the beautiful Pema Osel Ling retreat center in the Corralitos hills.  Through a series of activities, exercises and discussions, the group explored issues impacting their individual identities, built intergroup communication skills, and shared in celebrating and deconstructing the diversity of our community.  One student reflected on their experience saying “I have learned so much, and I am walking away with a whole new perspective."  Another noted “Great recognition of diversity.  We need more retreats like this that make a difference!”

Through this experience, the student facilitators – past participants who are mentored by college staff - are able to develop leadership skills and gain a deeper understanding of social justice and diversity.  In reflecting on what they learned about their experience, one facilitator stated, “I grew more in my consciousness and being able to lead and teach others was ultra-rewarding."  Another noted “I learned that I am not perfect in teaching others about what we talk about, but that everything is a learning experience.”

The students and facilitators were able to build lasting and authentic friendships with each other.  They created an art piece reflecting on what they learned that has been displayed in the Coco* this spring.  Drop by and see it when you are in the neighborhood!
