Special Academic Programs and Classes

Various programs are designed to involve College Ten students in academic and co-curricular activities beyond the Fall core course. They include the following:

Social Justice Issues Workshop:

Ten students have the option of enrolling in a weekly workshop called Social Justice Issues Workshop. This two-credit course emphasizes small-group experiential learning. Students explore their own relationship to social, political, and environmental issues at both the local community level and the broader societal level. Separate versions of the course are offered for freshpersons and for transfer and other upper-division students.

Research Opportunities:

College Ten has collaborative working relationships with distinctive research institutes concerned with international and global issues. These institutes are affiliated with the Social Sciences Division and include the following:

Additionally, there are several excellent opportunities for student involvement in research for course credit through most majors.

Students as Teachers:

College Ten students have special opportunities to become course assistants, tutors, and student mentors. By enrolling in Teaching Social Justice, students gain experience at teachers leading their own discussion sections of a College Ten course. They receive close supervision that emphasizes a collaborative approach to developing and enhancing teaching, communication, and leadership skills. The College Ten academic advisors can also direct students to other opportunities for student teaching and peer mentoring programs on campus. These are excellent opportunities to work closely with a faculty member and to develop one's own skills as a teacher and a leader.

Service Learning:

Given College Ten's focus on community, we hope our students will be interested in pursuing service learning opportunities. You can gain hands-on experience while serving others by volunteering weekly at a local non-profit agency, business, or school for course credit. College Ten has its own service- learning course called Esprit de Corps. For more information, please go to the College Ten Esprit de Corps web page. For students who are interested in volunteering, but who are unable to make a weekly commitment, College Ten’s service-learning organization, Praxis, is the perfect option. Through Praxis students can begin to explore the rewards of volunteerism by participating in a few activities per quarter. For more information, please go to the College Ten Student Organizations page.
